The short version
Start with the activity requirements, not the underwater photograph. Confirm swimming ability, equipment, supervision and the boarding method for the actual option. Weather, tides and visibility can change the day, and marine sightings are never guaranteed.
Shore, reef boat or river?
Fiji has reef settings close to shore as well as trips that head farther out by boat. The route to the water matters: getting into the sea from a beach is different from using a boat ladder or stepping across an uneven landing. Read the access description and ask the operator about anything that would affect your participation.
The water category can include more than snorkelling. Check whether the listing is a cruise, diving activity, river experience or another water sport. A photograph of a diver should not be read as evidence that a snorkelling option includes scuba equipment or instruction.
Know what is provided and what you must bring
Look for the equipment included in the selected option, such as a mask, fins or flotation aid, and ask about sizing when it matters. If you prefer your own gear, check what is practical to bring. Keep dry belongings protected and ask about storage if the experience involves getting in and out of the water repeatedly.
For children and mixed-ability groups, confirm minimum ages and any swimming or certification requirements before booking. Tell the operator about essential access or participation needs directly. A general family label does not replace the instructions for a particular activity, and a guide should not promise safety or suitability for everyone.
Let local conditions lead
Visibility and sea conditions vary. Plan a water activity with some flexibility in the holiday rather than leaving it to the only possible hour before you depart. Follow the operator’s briefing and avoid touching or standing on coral. Enjoy wildlife at a distance rather than expecting an encounter on demand.
Check the meeting point, hotel pickup coverage and cancellation terms on Viator before payment. A reef named in the description may be far from your resort, especially if it is on another island. Compare the complete travel day and ask whether the operator offers a suitable alternative when conditions change.
A few useful answers
Is snorkelling equipment always included?
No. Inclusions depend on the tour and option. Check equipment, sizing and any hire charges in the current listing, and ask the operator when a particular fit or flotation arrangement is important.
Will I definitely see a particular animal?
No. Wildlife encounters depend on animals, season and conditions. Choose an experience for its overall setting and activities rather than treating a photograph or past sighting as a promise.
