The short version
Confirm the island service with the resort or boat operator first. Then fit the flight and any airport-to-port car around its check-in deadline. HeyFiji’s Welcome Pickups search is for the road leg; it does not book an island ferry, resort boat or air charter.
Let the resort identify the connection
Two resorts in the same island group may use different transfer arrangements. Ask your property which boat, port or air service works, whether the transfer is compulsory and how it is paid for. Check both directions rather than assuming the return journey is identical to arrival.
Some trips pass through Port Denarau; others use a different departure point or a resort-arranged service. Do not book a car to a familiar marina until the island operator confirms where you need to be. A mapped pin on the island does not tell a road-transfer provider how you will cross the water.
Connect to check-in, not just departure
A boat’s departure time is not its latest check-in time. Work backwards from the operator’s required arrival, leaving space for the road leg and time at the airport. Ask whether your flight is compatible before committing to separate tickets that may not protect a missed connection.
On an island holiday, a mainland overnight stay can be a useful part of the itinerary. It gives a late international arrival somewhere to settle and keeps an early sailing from becoming a race. Build the return with the same care, especially when an international flight depends on the day’s boat journey.
Ask about the less obvious parts of boarding
Check the luggage allowance, handling arrangements and boarding method with the island operator. Large suitcases, surfboards, dive equipment and strollers need the right arrangements on the boat as well as in the car. Keep travel documents, essentials and valuables accessible rather than buried in luggage you may not reach during the crossing.
If steps, uneven surfaces or a particular boarding method would be difficult, explain that before booking and ask about the exact service. Accessibility cannot be confirmed from a resort photograph. Children, bulky equipment and a travelling party arriving on different flights also deserve an explicit plan.
Know which provider owns each leg
Keep the road transfer, island ticket and accommodation confirmations separately identifiable. A Welcome Pickups car booking does not include a ferry or private resort boat unless an offer explicitly states that arrangement. Book the island crossing directly through the recommended operator or property when it is not part of your accommodation package.
Weather and operational changes can affect sea and air connections. Read each provider’s change and cancellation conditions, and keep contact details available offline. If an operator moves a departure, check the consequences for your other bookings rather than assuming every provider will update automatically.
A few useful answers
Can I book the island boat in the transfer form?
No. The embedded Welcome Pickups service checks road transfers. Arrange the ferry, resort boat or specialist air connection with its operator or your property, then use the confirmed departure point for the road booking.
Should I choose a day cruise instead of a resort transfer?
Only when the operator explicitly supports the journey and luggage you need. A sightseeing cruise is an experience with its own itinerary, not an interchangeable one-way transfer to an island hotel.
